Smithing

Smithing

A weapon made in a Fabrication Bay has a shape, and you can hammer that shape into one of your own. You never have to, and it costs nothing. The shape changes only how the weapon looks, to you and to everyone who sees you carry it. Stats, odds and sockets are the same whatever shape it takes.

What you start with

Choose the Weapon shape and a material in the Fabrication Bay. A weapon of a random shape is already loaded, and the Preview shows it as an icon and in your hand.

You want Do
That weapon as it is Fabricate
To change its shape Customize: the anvil opens beside the preview; Done closes it
A different random one In Customize: Randomize
A known shape In Customize: click one of the shape tiles
To shape it yourself In Customize: hammer the one on the anvil, or click Blank for a plain bar

All of it is free: fabricating costs the same whatever the shape. Switching to another material strikes your blows again on the new metal; a blow that no longer lands there is dropped, with every blow after it.

The blank bar is 13 rows, each 8 cells wide: 104 cells of metal. A blow moves metal and never adds or removes any, so a longer blade is a thinner one.

Metal

A material with Kinetic 15 or more lands Edge, Bend and Flare one step harder on your own blows. Density 15 or more does the same for Flat on a blade. Tip, Socket and the Flat that turns a head into a block land the same on any metal.

The tools

Pick a tool, then point at a row of the bar: the anvil outlines what that blow would leave and the rows it would move, and the preview shows the result. Click or tap to strike; on a phone, press to see it and release to strike. Every row is one line of metal, tip at the top. Dimmed rows are ones the tool cannot move, and a blow that cannot land says why instead.

Tool Click Does
Edge Low on the bar Draws the bottom down into a handle
Edge Higher up Thins the blade around that row and draws it longer, evening out the taper
Flat The grip's top row, or the row above it Flares a guard above the grip
Flat The grip's last row Adds a pommel below the grip
Flat The very tip Pushes the point back into the blade, one row shorter; Tip points it again
Tip Any of the top 6 rows Reforges the top into a point
Bend The left or right half of a row Curves everything above that row toward the side you clicked
Socket Row 4 or lower Rolls that row and everything below it into a socket for a wooden haft
Flat Row 1 or 2 of a socketed head Upsets the whole head into a block
Flare The left or right half of a row of a socketed head Spreads that row out to one side, into an axe's bit

Undo takes back your last blow. It never takes back the shape you started from; pick another to change that. Blank starts over from the plain bar.

A handle

With Edge, click the bottom row twice. The bottom narrows to 2 cells over 3 rows: a grip. A bar without a grip is not yet a weapon.

What a blade becomes

The game never names your weapon's shape; this is what each one is, so you can aim for it. The first rule that fits wins.

Shape When the blade
Kris Waves: bends one way, then back, at least twice
Scimitar Curves 5 cells or more
Sabre Curves 2 to 4 cells
Dagger Is 16 rows or shorter
Falchion Is 5 cells wide or more somewhere
Rapier Is 28 rows or longer and thin (about 2 cells on average)
Longsword Is 28 rows or longer
Sword Anything else

To make a kris, Bend the blade one way near the tip, the other way lower down, and back again.

Hafted weapons

Socket turns the bar into a head on a wooden haft. It is the choice between a blade and a hafted weapon, and it cannot be undone except with Undo. After it, blows shape only the head. The head decides the weapon, and the weapon decides how long the haft is.

Shape Head Haft
Spear A leaf, or a head left as it is Medium
Pike A long, narrow spike, no wider than 3 cells Long
Javelin A small, slim point Short
Axe A bit: 2 or more rows at least 9 cells wide, pushed 2 or more cells to one side Medium
Bearded axe An axe with bit rows in the lower 40% of the head Medium
Hammer A block whose top two rows are 10 cells wide or more: Flat on row 1 or 2, once on a head socketed at rows 5 to 8, twice if socketed lower Short
War hammer A block 13 cells wide or more: Flat on row 1 or 2 two or three times, on a head socketed at rows 6 to 9 Medium

A spear, from a blank bar:

  1. Socket, then click row 10.
  2. Tip, then click row 6.
  3. Edge, then click the head's lowest row, just above the socket. This narrows it into a leaf.

An axe: Socket on row 8, then Flare on the same side of row 3 three times and row 4 twice. Flare lower rows too for a bearded axe.

Shape tiles

There is a tile for every kind above, drawn in your material. Each is a set of real blows on plain metal, already struck: picking one spawns the finished shape, and you can strike on from there.

Fabricating

Fabricate makes the weapon in the shape shown, at the bay's normal cost (Reference: Costs). Closing the window without fabricating loses the shape. You cannot fabricate while resting.
