Graves
A character's death leaves a grave on its tile, for good. Several graves can share a tile.
| Seen from | 12 tiles, as a headstone; the name shows in its panel and on recon notes |
| Panel | Opens standing on the tile: whose, when, cause of death, actions |
| In a fight | Cannot pray or desecrate |
Praying
| Restores | 10 HP, 10 stamina |
| Cooldown | 30 min per grave, 1 h once desecrated; shared by everyone |
| Desecrated grave | Each prayer rolls the ghost contest; if a ghost rises you fight it and are not restored |
Besides a Minor Recovery Vial, the only way to restore HP or stamina outside a Meditation Sanctum. See Reference: Recovery.
Desecrating
Marks the grave desecrated for everyone, once; it stays on the map, drawn differently. No loot or XP of its own; a job may pay for it, once it holds (a ghost still standing when you flee or die restores the grave). The buried name shows before you try.
The buried character's highest stat is matched against yours:
ghost chance = clamp(buried peak / (buried peak + your peak), 0.1, 0.9)
A ghost fights as a monster with the buried character's stats, level and techniques, and tries to escape after five turns without dealing damage (Combat).
| Result | Grave | XP | Ghost's possessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| No ghost | Desecrated | None | Untouched |
| Ghost defeated | Laid to rest | As for a monster of its level | One standing player's, at random |
| You flee or die | Restored | None | Kept |
| Ghost escapes | Desecrated | For damage dealt | Left to the sector's storage rooms; bound items are destroyed (Stash) |
A dead character's possessions include a fresh pattern book for every page in their Smith's Notes (Crafting); the notes themselves are bound and go with them. Whoever takes the possessions has the names in those notes written into their own, except a name or signature they already have (Crafting).
Dying to a ghost adds your grave to the same tile.
Choosing a grave
Name the buried character to pick one; a wrong name lists who is there.
| Unnamed action | Picks |
|---|---|
| Pray | First grave with a prayer available |
| Desecrate | Oldest grave not yet desecrated |
Graves laid to rest are not offered.
