The World

The World

No Fast Travel

The game's title is literal. There is no fast travel. Every sector must be walked through, one tile at a time. This is the core constraint that shapes the entire experience.

Sectors

The world is made of sectors — individual dungeon floors connected at their edges. Moving through a boundary portal loads the next sector.

Each sector has coordinates (X, Y). The starting area is at (0, 0). As you move further out:

  • Monsters get stronger (scaling with sector distance)
  • XP rewards increase (distance multiplier)
  • Biomes change based on the world's noise pattern

Biomes

The world has 7 biomes, each with its own visual style, monster roster, and room layouts:

Biome Feel
City Urban ruins, structured layouts
Mountain Rugged terrain, cliff-dwellers
Alley Narrow passages, tight corridors
Garden Overgrown, organic spaces
Labyrinth Complex maze-like structures
Corridor Zone Long connecting passages
Plaza Open areas with scattered rooms

Biomes blend into each other as you travel. The visual style changes — different wall colors, floor textures, and lighting.

Rooms

Special rooms appear within sectors:

Room Purpose
Meditation Sanctum Rest, regenerate vitals, craft techniques
Supply Cache Item spawns
Utility Closet Item spawns

The Meditation Sanctum is the most important room type. See Techniques for details on crafting and resting.

Encounters

While walking, each step has a 6% chance to trigger a combat encounter — about one fight every fifteen to twenty steps. Red glowing markers on the tactical map show where encounters have occurred.

Encounters scale with sector distance — further from the origin, the monsters are tougher but reward more XP.

See Combat for how encounters work.

Stamina and Exploration

Walking costs stamina. When your stamina hits zero:

  • Encounters cannot trigger (you're too exhausted)
  • You stumble, and it costs blood. Below 5 stamina your footing goes completely: one step in four puts you on the ground for 8 health, and the step itself is lost. On your feet the same thing happens about once in five thousand steps and costs nothing but the step. That is roughly two health a step while you are spent, so an empty bar is not free passage — it is a wall. A long walk home on nothing will kill you where no monster would have. Rest first, even when resting means finding a Sanctum the long way round
  • You cannot rest outside of a Meditation Sanctum. A grave gives a small one-off boost — 10 health and 10 stamina — but only once every half hour per grave, and only to whoever reaches it first

This creates a natural rhythm: explore until tired, find a Sanctum to rest, then continue.

Dying

If you die, your character is permanently marked as dead. There is no resurrection. You must create a new character to play again.

See Combat > Death for details.

Markets

A rare room where players sell to each other. Larger than most rooms you will find — three tiles by three — and worth remembering the location of, because stock is per-market: what is on the shelves in one is not on the shelves anywhere else. See Market.
